Every ranking has to start somewhere, and at #15 is the least established player on this list but perhaps one of the most intriguing.

Rhys Mariu earns the final spot in my rankings not because of what he has already achieved at Test level, but because of what he has shown in New Zealand's domestic game and the belief that he has become one of the country's most promising top-order batting prospects. While others outside this list have stronger first-class careers or more international experience, Mariu's recent rise suggests he is moving into genuine Test contention ahead of the Trans-Tasman Trophy.

Why #15?

Ranking current players isn't just about career achievements. It is about identifying who the best Test cricketers in New Zealand are today and who is closest to making an impact at the highest level.

Mariu narrowly claims the final place because he has developed into one of the country's brightest opening batters. His temperament, ability to occupy the crease and willingness to build long innings have made him an increasingly serious option for New Zealand's Test future.

At this stage, however, potential remains a significant part of the argument. Until he proves himself consistently at international level, it would be difficult to rank him above players who have already succeeded in Test cricket.

Current Form:

Mariu's domestic performances have steadily elevated his reputation. His ability to score runs against the new ball has demonstrated the patience and technical discipline required of a Test opener.

Rather than relying on aggressive stroke play, Mariu builds innings through sound judgement outside off stump, compact defence and an understanding of when to attack. Why He Isn't Higher:

The players ranked above Mariu have already demonstrated their ability either in Test cricket or over a much longer period in domestic cricket.

Nathan Smith, Jacob Duffy and Zac Foulkes have all either contributed internationally or established themselves more convincingly against higher levels of opposition. Likewise, experienced players such as Henry Nicholls and Mitchell Santner have years of Test performances behind them.

Mariu simply hasn't accumulated enough evidence yet to justify placing him ahead of proven internationals.

The Counterargument:

Some readers may argue Mariu shouldn't appear on this list at all.

That is a fair position.

Players with more extensive first-class records or previous Test experience could easily be considered. However, rankings should also recognise who is closest to influencing New Zealand's Test side moving forward. Mariu's trajectory, technical ability and growing reputation make him a worthy inclusion, even if he occupies the final position.

Looking Ahead to the Trans-Tasman Trophy

Whether Mariu features this summer or not, the series could become an important reference point in his development.

Facing Australia's world-class pace attack is the benchmark every aspiring New Zealand opener must eventually overcome. If opportunities arise, strong performances against Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood would immediately strengthen Mariu's claim as one of New Zealand's emerging Test players.

Verdict:

Every ranking needs a player who represents potential rather than established greatness.

Rhys Mariu is that player.

His domestic performances suggest New Zealand may have uncovered another technically accomplished top-order batter capable of succeeding in Test cricket. He still has plenty to prove before climbing this list, but as the countdown begins towards the Trans-Tasman Trophy, Mariu deserves recognition as one of the country's most promising Test prospects.
